Halo: The Master Chief Collection requires a 20gb patch before you can play multiplayer

Halo - Master Chief's Helmet

Looking forward to Halo: The Master Chief Collection on Xbox One? So are we. It’s no secret that we’re big fans of the Halo series here at Continue Play, and 343 Industries’ remaster of Halo 2 looks utterly brilliant. Hell, it would be good enough on it’s own - so the fact that Microsoft is also throwing in Halo: Anniversary, Halo 3 and Halo 4 - plus every multiplayer map ever made for all four games - makes it a very tasty prospect indeed. And that’s before considering that Halo 2 Remastered comes in a brand new engine, with a completely re-recorded sountrack and re-done cutscenes (you can switch between the original visuals and the remastered visuals at will), while Halo Anniversary, Halo 3 and Halo 4 all run in 1080p and at 60 frames per second.

Now for the bad news: it’s emerged that in order to play Halo: The Master Chief Collection‘s various multiplayer modes and maps, you’ll first need to download a 20gb day one patch.

Yes, you read that correctly. 20gb.

Why so large? Well, in a new post on Halo Waypoint, 343 has said that by the time they finished putting the single-player campaigns of the Halo 1-4 on the disc, there was no room left for the multiplayer - so they’re shipping it as a patch instead.

For those of you who have pre-ordered the digital version of the game over Xbox Live, I hope you have a good internet connection - it all adds up to a rather frightening 65gb download. Eeek!

In other news, in the same post, 343 stated that the game has gone Gold and will meet it’s release date of November 11 for most countries. Players in Belgium will be able to play from November 12, Japan will receive the game on November 13, while those of you in France (I’ve checked, we actually get a surprising number of French readers) will receive the game on November 14. Apparently some people had expressed disappointment that they wouldn’t be able to get their hands on the game until November 14 outside of North America, so Microsoft has managed to move things around to ensure as many people as possible are able to play Master Chief’s first 4 adventures a few days earlier than was originally planned.
