Fans of the classic point-and-click games will be familiar with the names Ron Gilbert and Gary Winnick. For those unfamiliar, Ron Gilbert was one of the writers for the famous Monkey Island series, and Gary Winnick and Ron Gilbert both worked on Manic Mansion. Both of these series are famous for pioneering the point-and-click genre.

Today, Ron Gilbert and Gary Winnick have combined forces on a new Kickstarter project, Thimbleweed Park. Thimbleweed Park intends to be a classic in every sense of the word — a 2D point-and-click that is the spiritual successor to the titles that molded the genre into what it is. The Kickstarter page goes on to detail the plot, which revolves around the bizarre and abstract world of two washed up detectives as they’re called in to investigate a washed up body in the river outside town. It’s a satirical romp through the once vibrant, now run-down town of Thimbleweed Park, in which players will be able to switch between five playable characters at their leisure. Further, it details the return to low resolution, a classic verb interface, and varying difficulty levels for those new to and interested in the classics.

Gilbert and Winnick stated that they “want Thimbleweed Park to be like an undiscovered classic LucasArts’ adventure game you’d never played before,” and based on the Kickstater it seems they’re going to accomplish that goal. The giant pixels, the classic interface, the sound effects and midi-esque music brings back the late 1980’s with an easy charm.

Even with a high asking amount of $375,000 on Kickstarter, it seems fairly likely that a game with this sort of pedigree behind it will be funded without much difficulty. As of today, the Kickstarter has over 1,000 backers who have pledged a total of $47,822. The Kickstarter is open for 29 more days, closing on December 18, 2014.
