Project CARS On Wii U May Have Crashed

Development of crowd-funded racing simulation Project CARS on Wii U may have gone off track.

Slightly Mad Studios has announced that it’s struggling to get Project CARS running well on Nintendo’s hardware, meaning that the Wii U version of the game could be cancelled.

“At the moment we’re running at about 23fps on the Wii U,” Ian Bell, Head of Studio, explained on the official forum for Project CARS.

“Honestly, unless we really cut the looks back I think we’re looking to Nintendo’s next console.”

Bell made it clear that he had no insider knowledge on Nintendo’s upcoming NX hardware, just that he’s hoping for an announcement on it at E3 this year.

“We’re awaiting/hoping for more of a hardware announcement at E3…” he continued. “We could reach a fairly solid 30fps but it might take a hell of a lot of work.

“On the other hand, about halfway through us finishing, Nintendo might announce a new console (I have zero knowledge on this BTW but I’ve heard ‘rumours’). Our work might just be the best thing that ever hit that new console in the driving sim genre.”

“So we’re playing a waiting game at the moment and yes, economics do come in to it.”

However, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has repeatedly stated that nothing of the new NX console will be revealed at E3 this year, so Bell and Nintendo racing fans alike may be left disappointed..

There’s been concern about the Wii U version of Project CARS for some time, considering Slightly Mad Studios is yet to show any gameplay from the console. Twin this with the fact that previously announced versions on the Xbox 360 and PS3 were scrapped, people are justifiably worried that the Wii U version could go the same way.

Nic recently reviewed Project CARS, giving it a 7/10, and saying of it “If you like racing sims, buy Project CARS and you’ll have hundreds of hours of fun at your fingertips. If you don’t know whether or not you like racing sims, and you’re looking for a decent entry point that eases you into things gently, you may want to look elsewhere.”

For racing fans on the Wii U, it would be a real shame if Project CARS didn’t manage to overcome this barrier and reach the finish line with it’s development. Here’s hoping Slightly Mad Studios manage to pull it off. Take a gander at the launch trailer below.
