Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3 announced

CI Games has announced that it’s “deep in development” on the third instalment in the Sniper: Ghost Warrior series.

The imaginatively-titled Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3 is currently slated for release in the first half of 2016 for PS4, Xbox One and PC. CI Games has said that the new title will feature “AAA production”. Steve Hart, former senior producer on Rebellion’s Sniper Elite v2, is said to be part of the development team.

“The Sniper: Ghost Warrior franchise is one of the most popular in the CI Games portfolio with over 5.5 million copies sold, so we’re investing a significant amount of effort into the third installment,” said CI Games’ CEO, Marek Tyminski. “We’re fully committed to creating a AAA franchise that gamers can rely on for the ultimate first-person sniper experience.”

Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3 will be set in Eastern Europe, and see players caught between 3 different warring factions. Levels are said to be non-linear sandboxes, offering as high degree of replayability. The aim is for the game to offer “intriguing challenges” to veterans, while still remaining accessible to newcomers.

Sniper: Ghost Warrior hasn’t had the most illustrious history - critical reception of the first two titles was somewhat less than stellar, it has to be said; despite this, the series has proved popular among gamers. The first two games have managed to rack up an impressive 5.5 million units sold. With quite a long way to go before release, the developers have plenty of time to try and make the game live up to their promises. Here’s hoping they manage to achieve their ambitions.

CI Games’ last release was the decent-but-flawed action RPG, Lords of the Fallen. Brian Kale reviewed the game for Continue Play, awarding it an above-average 6/10, and saying that despite its flaws and none-too-subtle similarities to Dark Souls, it’s a solid foundation on which to build an enjoyable Dark Fantasy series. “It’s a decent game, just with enough rough edges to hold it back,” he wrote. “Hopefully, if the game gets a sequel, CI Games will be able to give the series more of its own personality, instead of ruthlessly cribbing from others.”
