Transformers Universe cancelled after 6 months in open beta

If you were interested in checking out the team-based, PVP MMO Transformers Universe by Hasbro Games and Jagex, you’ve missed your chance - Hasbro and developer Jagex are shutting the game down after 6 months in open beta.

Confirmation of the game’s closure was posted on the Transformers Universe website yesterday, much to the disappointment of the development team. The announcement comes on the heels of rumored layoffs at UK developer Jagex, who also run the wildly popular MMO Runsescape. Back in July, Jagex noted that 13 people on the team had been made redundant, but that possible layoffs would not adversely affect Transformers Universe.

In the announcement, the Jagex team said they were “hugely disappointed” as the game begins its shut down period, terminating completely 10am GMT on January 31, 2015.

“As a team,” the post continued, “We can’t thank players enough for the support that they have shown us over the last few years of development, and even more so during our BETA period.”

Currently, new players cannot create accounts, but those with existing account will be able to play them until the final shut down date next year. Jagex will also refund those players who purchased a Founder’s Pack, as well as those who bought relic bundles and starter packs. The post mentioned that players should expect their refunds to be processed within the next 30 days.

Jagex did invite the community to discuss the recent decision via their community forums, but cautioned players to be mindful and respectful to the dev team (something online communities are rarely good at doing).

Just yesterday, Jagex announced that their latest project Block N Load, a mixed strategy/FPS/crafter/builder, went into closed Beta. We hope to have some hands-on impressions of that title soon, so keep your eyes peeled and subscribe to our RSS feed, or follow us on Twitter and Facebook.
